I have long been interested in the hidden threads connecting technology and magic. My intention is to explore these links not through simple analogy, but through a spirit akin to Jungian thought—examining how we spiritually experience the tools we create.
To understand the spiritual dimension of technology, we must first acknowledge that our modern “miracles” are simply renamed enchantments.
When we harness electricity or capture the wind, we are exercising power over natural forces in a way that mirrors the ancient magician’s command of the elements. When we communicate instantly across oceans or travel thousands of miles in hours, we aren’t just using engineering; we are transcending the physical limitations of the human body. We are practicing a form of secular teleportation.
There is also something deeply “arcane” about our current era. In the past, secret knowledge was the province of the occultist. Today, that role has shifted to the coder and the engineer. To the average user, the smartphone is a black box—a talisman that performs extraordinary deeds via laws of physics and logic that remain invisible and mysterious.
However, the most profound parallel lies in the nature of agency.
Historically, the magician rarely claimed total autonomy; instead, they acted as a conduit for gods, spirits, or unseen energies. They were dependent on an “Other.” For decades, we have viewed technology differently—as a passive tool, no different from a hammer or a wheel. But as we enter the age of Artificial Intelligence and autonomous robotics, that boundary is blurring.
We are moving from a world of tools to a world of agents. When we interact with AI, we aren’t just operating a machine; we are petitioning an independent actor to perform a task on our behalf. In doing so, we have unwittingly returned to the state of the early practitioner: relying on a power that is integrated into our lives, yet remains fundamentally mysterious.
For those drawn to this site through an interest in paganism or the occult, I wonder: does this shift make technology feel more “sacred,” or more daunting? At what point does a sophisticated algorithm become indistinguishable from a spirit?
